How Much Does Sublimation Printing Cost in the UK? Price Guide
See rough UK prices for sublimation printed mugs, T-shirts, photo slates, coasters and tumblers, what drives the cost, and how to get an accurate quote.
As a rough guide, sublimation printing in the UK often costs £8 to £15 for a one-off personalised mug, £12 to £25 for a printed polyester T-shirt, and £15 to £40 for a photo slate or metal panel. Smaller items such as coasters and keyrings can start from a few pounds. The price depends mainly on the blank item, the print size, any design or photo editing, quantity and postage, and makers set their own prices.
How sublimation printing works (and why it affects cost)
Sublimation uses special ink printed onto transfer paper. A heat press then turns that ink into a gas, which bonds with polyester fibres or a polymer coating on the item. The result is a print that sits inside the surface rather than on top of it, so it does not crack or peel like some other methods.
The catch is that sublimation only works on the right blanks: polyester or high-polyester fabrics, and hard items such as mugs, slates, metal panels and coasters that have a special polymer coating. It also works best on white or light surfaces, because the ink is see-through and there is no white ink. These coated blanks cost more than plain ones, which is part of every quote. Our guide to what sublimation printing is explains the process in more detail.
What drives the price of sublimation printing
The blank item
The blank is often the biggest single cost. A standard 11oz coated mug is inexpensive for a maker to buy, while a stainless steel tumbler, a large rock slate or a quality sports top costs considerably more. Coloured-handle mugs, magic (colour-changing) mugs and glass mugs all sit above a plain white mug.
Print size and coverage
A small chest logo uses less paper and ink than an all-over print. Full wrap-around mug designs and edge-to-edge T-shirt prints take more care to line up, and large panels need a bigger heat press. Bigger coverage usually means a higher price.
Design work
If you send a finished, print-ready design, the maker simply prints and presses it. If you want them to create a design, add names, choose fonts or build a layout around a theme, that takes time. Some makers include simple text personalisation in the price and charge a fee for anything more involved.
Photo editing
Photo gifts are popular, and the quality of your photo matters. Cropping, brightening, removing a background or combining several photos into a collage all add time. A sharp, well-lit original photo keeps this cost down.
Quantity
One-off items carry all the setup time on their own. Ordering several of the same design, such as mugs for a team or tops for a club, often brings the price per item down noticeably. Ask for prices at a few different quantities.
Packaging and postage
Mugs, slates and glass need careful packing to arrive in one piece, and gift boxes cost extra. Postage for a small parcel through Royal Mail or a courier is usually a few pounds, more for heavy slates or multiple items. Collecting from a local maker can save this.

Personalised mug prices in the UK
Personalised mug prices in the UK vary more than people expect. A simple name or short message on a white mug sits at the lower end. A full photo wrap, a collage, or a design created from scratch sits higher. If the mug is a gift, ask about a box and how it will be packed for posting.
Sublimated mugs are generally fine for everyday drinks, though many makers recommend hand washing to keep the print bright for longer. Dishwasher and microwave suitability depends on the specific blank, so ask the maker which mugs they use.
Sublimation T-shirt cost
Sublimation T-shirt cost depends heavily on the garment. Sublimation needs polyester, ideally 100% or a very high polyester blend, and works best on white or pale colours. That makes it a great fit for sportswear, running tops and team kits, which are usually polyester anyway.
If you want a cotton T-shirt or a dark garment, sublimation is not the right method, and a maker may suggest vinyl or another approach instead. Our guide to T-shirt printing methods compared sets out the options.
If your design involves a football club badge, a brand logo or a well-known character, makers need permission to reproduce someone else's brand or characters, so ask for an original design or use your own artwork.
How to get an accurate quote
The clearer your request, the closer the quotes will be to what you end up paying. Include:
- The item and quantity. For example, "six white 11oz mugs" or "one adult medium polyester running top".
- Your design or photos. Attach them if you have them, or describe what you want.
- Print area. Front only, wrap-around, or all-over.
- Deadline. Birthdays and Christmas fill up fast, so give a "needed by" date.
- Delivery. Say whether you are happy to have it posted or want a local maker.
On Hire a Maker you can post a free request in your own words with up to four photos or sketches, choose sublimation as the craft, and add an optional budget. Makers who do sublimation and cover your area (or post UK-wide) get an email alert and reply through on-site messages with ideas, prices and timings. Price, payment and delivery are agreed directly between you and the maker. Our guide on how to brief a maker has more tips.
Questions people ask
Why is sublimation printing more expensive than a shop-bought mug?
A personalised item is made to order, one at a time, with coated blanks, special ink and transfer paper. You are paying for setup, pressing and often design or photo work rather than a mass-produced product.
Can sublimation be done on cotton?
Not well. The ink bonds with polyester, so on cotton the print washes out quickly. For cotton garments, ask a maker about vinyl or embroidery instead.
Is it cheaper to order in bulk?
Usually, yes. Setup and design time is shared across every item, so the price per piece often drops as the quantity rises.
How long does a sublimation order take?
Pressing itself is quick, but makers plan around their other orders and postage. Many can turn a simple job around within a week or so, while busy seasons take longer, so ask when you request a quote.
